“I’d rather have a Proverbs 31 woman than a Victoria’s Secret model.”

A new movement has sprung up on Facebook, entitled “I’d rather have a Proverbs 31 woman than a Victoria’s Secret model.” Or, from a woman’s point of view, “I’d rather BE a Proverbs 31 woman than a Victoria’s Secret model.” Since going viral on Facebook and You-Tube, Alex Eklund and http://live31.org have been receiving world-wide attention. This was my message to this wise young man:

Proverbs 31:30 tells us “Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting.” It’s inner beauty that matters.

The danger, however, is that it is human nature to lower the ideal until we can fit it. We know that we can never be perfect, so we stop trying. And yet God spoke through Jesus: “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matt. 5:48) and through Moses and Peter: “Be holy, because I am holy” (Lev. 11:44, 1 Pet. 1:16).

Only a handful of women in the world look like Victoria Secret models. As for the rest of us, although it is a sin to care too much about our physical appearance, it is also a sin not to care enough. I believe the woman in Proverbs 31 took good care of her appearance. God, who made butterflies, rainbows and sunsets, expects nothing less from us. The Proverbs 31 strove to be the best she could. She knew that she couldn’t change the contours of her face, but she could change its expression. If we do the same, we will look more beautiful with each passing year!

Alex, someday you will meet your Proverbs 31 woman, and you will be the kind of man she deserves!
